Ogdensburg, N.Y. \u2013 Green Party candidate Matt Funiciello was hard at work on election day \u2013 baking bread.<\/p>\n

The candidate for New York\u2019s 21st congressional district has been a baker for 30 years and put in a few hours at his Glens Falls business before slipping off to vote himself. He then returned to continue with work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI may be the only candidate in the county or even the country working at my job on election day,\u2019\u2019 Funiciello said.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s somehow fitting for a man who calls himself the “working class candidate.”<\/p>\n

Funiciello is the only other\u00a0party candidate running against Republican incumbent Elise Stefanik and Democrat hopeful Mike Derrick. Funiciello said both his opponents are \u201ctourists\u201d as \u201cneither candidate really had ever lived here in their lives.\u201d Funiciello was born and raised in Glens Falls, and spent most of his adult life in the district.<\/p>\n

The 49-year-old first ran for Congress\u00a0during the 2014 midterms. Despite losing to Stefanik, who became the youngest woman elected to Congress at 30, Funiciello garnered 11 per cent of the entire vote, which he considered a Green Party success.<\/p>\n

Funiciello is the only Green Party candidate for Congress from upstate New York, even though his particular district has a full slate of Green Party candidates on the ballot, including Senate candidate Robin Laverne Wilson\u00a0from New York City.<\/p>\n

Funiciello said climate change is probably the most important issue, \u201cnext to war and peace.\u201d He said the response from the major parties to climate change\u00a0has been insufficient.<\/p>\n

And he\u2019s adamant that his candidacy will not result in vote splitting. \u201cA vote for any party other than a third party candidate in a safe state in the United States, given the proximity of the two major corporate\u2026parties, is almost indefensible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Funiciello, who went to high school in Ottawa, does have a small beef with his northern neighbours. \u201cI do fault the Canadian system for planting a lot of progressive seeds in my mind,\u201d he says, \u201csingle payer health care and peace being two of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked about the presidential race between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, Funiciello says that given a choice, he\u2019d take Trump.<\/p>\n

Funiciello will be watching the election results from his Rock Hill Bakery in Glens Falls. He said by this evening he\u2019ll be ready for a good glass of wine, or two.<\/p>\n
