Close-up strives to provide news from the point of view of the individual. We share stories from those directly making and affected by the news. By getting close up to people, we go deeper to give a human face to the events facing us all.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
\"Alex\"<\/a><\/td>\nAlex Mazur\u00a0<\/strong>@AlexandraMazur1<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

Alex hails from Windsor, Ontario but has called Ottawa home for the last six years. She completed a degree in English literature at the University of Ottawa and a professional writing diploma from Algonquin College in hopes of becoming the next Hemingway (sans the beard). But after working as a freelance writer, a blogger and a magazine editor she realized that the real world of journalism has more stories to offer than fictitious novels.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\"Halima\"<\/a><\/td>\nHalima Sogbesan\u00a0<\/strong>@HalZ_MalZ<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Halima is a Nigerian graduate student studying journalism at Carleton University. Her interest in journalism stems from its potential to tell stories that otherwise may get no attention. She has served as editor of The Siren, the student newspaper of the American University of Nigeria, and has written for Nigeria\u2019s The Nation and Premium Times. Until August 2015, she worked at ActionAid Nigeria.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\"JP\"<\/a><\/td>\nJean Pierre Niyitanga <\/strong>@nijepi
\n<\/a><\/em>Jean Pierre\u00a0has a bachelor of journalism from the National University of Rwanda. He was editor for Kigali Today, a news website exclusively about Rwanda, for three years. An advocate for independent media, he\u00a0worked on media development projects in Rwanda, giving him an\u00a0understanding of challenges Rwandan journalists face. Niyitanga hopes to use the skills gained at\u00a0Carleton to improve\u00a0professional journalism in his home country.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
\"Rupert\"<\/a><\/td>\nRupert\u00a0<\/strong>Nuttle\u00a0<\/b>@RupertNuttle<\/a><\/p>\n

In a past life, Rupert was a painter. He spent years in studios and galleries in Vancouver, Halifax and Paris, only to end up a line cook in a Montreal bistro. In the process he co-founded Crit Paper, a culture and criticism periodical he continues to edit.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\"Sabrina\"<\/a><\/td>\nSabrina Nemis\u00a0<\/strong>@SabrinaNemis<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

Sabrina is the election bureau chief for the Canadian University Press, a radio host on CHUO 89.1 FM, the vice-president of the Fulcrum board of directors and she has freelanced for Paste Magazine and Xtra. She’s also terrified of Australia \u2014 especially its deadly blue-ringed octopus.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\"Spencer\"<\/a><\/td>\nSpencer Van Dyk\u00a0<\/strong>@SpencerLynne<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

Throughout her undergraduate degree in international studies and modern languages, Spencer worked at the University of Ottawa newspaper, the Fulcrum, first as staff writer, then news editor, and finally as online editor. She attended four consecutive national conferences for student journalists, working as its social media coordinator in 2015. She now works as the Ontario reporter for the Canadian University Press covering federal politics. She is a lover of black coffee and red wine.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\"Simon\"<\/a><\/td>\nSimon Deshamps\u00a0<\/strong>@simondes73<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

Growing up in a suburb of Montreal, Simon discovered his passion for journalism listening to Canadiens games on radio. He completed a bachelor in political science at the University of Qu\u00e9bec in Montreal,\u00a0was communication director of the Chateauguay Grenadiers Midget AAA for three years, and correspondent at the Radio-Canada B.C. show Phare Ouest in the summer of 2013.\u00a0At Carleton, he is persuing\u00a0his dream of becoming a sports journalist or political reporter.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\"Dave\"<\/a><\/td>\nDavid Deen\u00a0<\/strong>@DeenStory<\/a><\/p>\n

Originally from Toronto, David studied political science and international development at York University. Before Carleton, he lived in Tokyo, Japan, for five years, working as a corporate trainer and freelance travel writer. When he isn\u2019t in school, David likes to travel and consume the news, usually not at the same time.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
