In 1990, there were 49.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:12%\">\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cusjc.ca\/mrp\/catholicisminquebec\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-10-at-1.59.23-PM-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-195\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><span style=\"color:#c9ba7d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">&#8220;<em>The reality is we stopped getting candidates at all for the priesthood \u2013 whether for diocesan priest or for religious orders for the rest of Canada<\/em>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><cite><span style=\"color:#1d93d1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2014 <em><strong>Paul Andr\u00e9 Durocher<\/strong><\/em><br><\/span><em><span style=\"color:#c9ba7d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Archbishop of the Gatineau diocese<\/span><\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Less and less Canadian men are interested in becoming priests. As a result, the number of candidates admitted in seminaries has plummeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/5941395\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This downward trend has been happening for about 15 years, according to Luc Paquet, rector of the Grand S\u00e9minaire de Qu\u00e9bec. Paquet is in charge of the training program for priests and has held that position for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paquet was 18 years old when he started his studies at the school he now works at. There were 17 guys in his cohort. Now, 47 years later, there are only eight students in the entire school, all years combined. And it\u2019s common for some of them to abandon their studies halfway through, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a startling difference from 50 years ago when choosing to be a priest was still quite common, according to Durocher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:75%\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" allow=\"autoplay\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/1039484518&amp;color=%231d93d1&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;show_teaser=true&amp;visual=true\"><\/iframe><div style=\"font-size: 10px; color: #cccccc;line-break: anywhere;word-break: normal;overflow: hidden;white-space: nowrap;text-overflow: ellipsis; font-family: Interstate,Lucida Grande,Lucida Sans Unicode,Lucida Sans,Garuda,Verdana,Tahoma,sans-serif;font-weight: 100;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/user-33646492\" title=\"Emilie\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #cccccc; text-decoration: none;\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/user-33646492\/gatineau-archbishop-paul-andre-durocher-on-what-it-was-like-when-he-decided-to-become-a-priest\" title=\"Gatineau Archbishop Paul Andr\u00e9 Durocher on what it was like when he decided to become a priest\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #cccccc; text-decoration: none;\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:25%\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><span style=\"color:#1d93d1\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>Then and now &#8211; Gatineau archbishop Paul Andr\u00e9 Durocher shares what it was like when he started his priesthood training in 1977<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#1c8cbc\"><strong><span style=\"color:#1d93d1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Why are young men abandoning priesthood?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Today\u2019s youth are eager to study, travel, or work after they finish high school.&nbsp; Not many are of them ready to commit to seven years of studies and a lifetime of celibacy and commitment to priesthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:40%\">\n<p><br><br><br>Celibacy in particular is difficult to accept for today\u2019s young men because it \u201ccompletely goes against the contemporary mindset where sexuality, if it isn\u2019t expressed, it isn\u2019t healthy,\u201d Durocher said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>It also prevents married men who may otherwise have been very keen on the profession, and who usually have more life experience, from applying. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:60%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-background is-style-default\"><blockquote class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#c9ba7d\"><p>\u201cThe whole idea of saying at the age of 22 that, you know, \u2018I\u2019m going to be a priest, I\u2019m committing myself to this way of life for the rest of my life\u2019 is very very foreign in contemporary mindset.\u201d<\/p><cite><span style=\"color:#1d93d1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2013 Paul Andr\u00e9 Durocher<br><\/span><em><em>Archbishop of the Gatineau diocese<\/em><\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ignace Ndongala, adjunct professor at the University of Montreal\u2019s Institute of Religious Studies, said the celibacy requirement has further contributed to the shortage of local candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, those choosing the religious vocation are older than they used to be, according Paquet. \u201cWhen my cohort started, we were between 18 and 20 years old \u2013 while now those that get trained are between 25 and 35 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Gasp\u00e9 bishop Ga\u00e9tan Proulx was a child, everyone in his community went to church. But now young families almost never go he said, so it\u2019s very difficult for children and teenagers to feel connected to the religion. \u201cYou can\u2019t discover your vocation [for priesthood] in that situation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#1d93d1\"><strong><em>See also, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cusjc.ca\/mrp\/catholicisminquebec\/chapter-4\/\">Quebec&#8217;s weakening Catholic adherence<\/a>\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fact that church attendance and adherence to Catholicism is also decreasing among younger adults is another key factor in the struggle to recruit new priests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe presence of youth at church is rarer and rarer, more and more minimal \u2013 so how do we reach young men?\u201d said Paquet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color:#1d93d1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">New ways to recruit<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Church is no longer allowed to recruit men in schools, and less young people attend mass. So the church had to get creative in the ways it reaches out to men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best place to reach potential priests is at major events organized by the Roman Catholic Church, such as meetings with the Pope, according to Paquet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s also done more informally by looking out for men that seem particularly involved in the church, Durocher said.
