He must get approval from his bishop back home (or from his religious order, in the case of a missionary priest) to keep working in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make the move permanent, his bishop at home and the one in Canada must agree to formally transfer him from one diocese to the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color:#1d93d1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Confused? Priests that want to work there must first get a Quebec selection certificate before they can apply for federal work permits. This document confirms that the provincial government has accepted to welcome the applicant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some dioceses (such as Gasp\u00e9) know this process well and actively help their new priests with getting their certificate, Tidjani said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color:#1d93d1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Missionaries or migrant workers?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:1px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cusjc.ca\/mrp\/catholicisminquebec\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2021\/05\/Screen-Shot-2021-05-10-at-1.05.39-AM-edited.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><span style=\"color:#c9ba7d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u201cIf a priest or a nun comes here from another country to work, are they coming as part of their mission or are they an immigrant?\u201d<\/span><\/p><cite><span style=\"color:#1d93d1\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>\u2014 Pamela Klassen<\/strong><\/span><br><em><span style=\"color:#c9ba7d\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Professor in the Department for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto<\/span><\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We shouldn\u2019t see these priests as just missionaries, we should also consider them to be foreign workers, said Pamela Klassen, professor in the Department for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re a country of immigration,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you just looked at the practice of workers coming from other countries to Canada, they&#8217;re immigrants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, about one in four workers in Canada is an immigrant, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/71-606-x\/71-606-x2018001-eng.htm\">a 2017 analysis of the Canadian immigration labour force<\/a> by Statistics Canada. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/immigration-refugees-citizenship\/corporate\/publications-manuals\/annual-report-parliament-immigration-2020.html#annex2\">last year\u2019s annual report to Parliament on immigration<\/a> shows that economic migration increased between 2015 and 2019, with as many as 196,658 people coming here for work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nnaemeka Ali, a Nigerian priest who works in Innu communities north of Sept-\u00celes, Que., said that priesthood isn\u2019t the only sector that relied on migrants to solve a workforce shortage, especially in Northern Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always hear about people saying, \u2018ah in C\u00f4te Nord you have so many Black priests\u2019,\u201d Ali said. \u201cThat\u2019s true,\u201d he said, but he pointed out that there were nine Black teachers in Schefferville, a small town near Labrador, and Black nurses as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cIf you compare it\u2019s one priest, nine teachers, so there is a problem in the teaching sector, there\u2019s a problem in the nursing sector, there are many layers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada\u2019s population is aging \u2013 especially in Quebec \u2013 and adults are having less and less children. It\u2019s inevitable that more migrants will be needed to fill job vacancies across the country, Ali said. \u201cIt\u2019s not going to stop now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Canadians recognize the necessity of bringing doctors and nurses from abroad, then they shouldn\u2019t take issue with the same thing happening for priests, he said. \u201cIf those ones are not problematic, why is it that this is a problem?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Top photo \u00a9 \u00c9milie Warren<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From hiring to moving: the process There are three ways for Catholic priests to come from abroad to work in Canada.
