{"id":37,"date":"2023-12-17T02:18:01","date_gmt":"2023-12-17T02:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cusjc.ca\/mrp\/social-media-masculinity\/?p=37"},"modified":"2024-01-19T01:30:12","modified_gmt":"2024-01-19T01:30:12","slug":"chapter-3-where-else-is-tate-appearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cusjc.ca\/mrp\/social-media-masculinity\/2023\/12\/17\/chapter-3-where-else-is-tate-appearing\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 2: Where else is Tate appearing?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the United Kingdom, women and LGBTQ+ teachers have expressed feeling unsafe in their classrooms or school environments because of Tates influence on students.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tate\u2019s influence has reached classrooms in Ontario as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amanda, 23, says Andrew Tate came up often when she was a substitute teacher at a middle school in Belleville, Ontario.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amanda is completing her teacher\u2019s candidacy, and her name has been changed in this article for privacy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amanda&#8217;s students aren&#8217;t allowed to have their phones with them in class so students in the combined grades seven and eight class would use their school Chromebooks to watch TikTok on break, showing Tate\u2019s videos to each other.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2022\/08\/10\/teens-social-media-and-technology-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pew Research Center<\/a>,  97 per cent of teens report using the internet daily, and 46 per cent of teens report using the internet almost constantly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Teen browsing habits \" aria-label=\"Grouped Bars\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-1Bc0v\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/1Bc0v\/1\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border: none;\" width=\"600\" height=\"537\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Before addressing the issue with her class, Amanda consulted more senior teachers at her&nbsp;school to see whether Tate was coming up in their classrooms too.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other teachers said that they were experiencing the same trend in their classrooms, and it was appropriate to address the issue with students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the problem, said Amanda, was that the boys sharing Tate\u2019s videos didn\u2019t seem to know much about Tate\u2019s offline life. To them, Tate\u2019s content was about learning how to be a man, and the misogyny slipped by.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, Tate was detained in Romania on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-65959097\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charges of rape and human trafficking<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just said, do you guys know what human trafficking is?\u201d Amanda says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One boy asked whether Tate had sexually assaulted someone.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI said yes, he did, and that\u2019s why I don\u2019t want you talking about this in the classroom,\u201d said Amanda.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\" style=\"font-style:italic;font-weight:600\"><blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to sugarcoat things like that, especially with older children, because they obviously understand those things are wrong. I don\u2019t feel like it would do anyone any favours to gloss over that or tone it down.\u201d<\/p><cite>&#8211; Amanda<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Amanda says she would be comfortable addressing Tate\u2019s videos with younger students, if necessary.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the current Ontario curriculum, students begin learning about consent in elementary school. Amanda sees the conversation about Tate as an opportunity to apply that knowledge about what consent means.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, her approach would differ. \u201cIf it were younger kids, I\u2019d say \u2018Hey, it really hurts my feelings when you guys talk about him. It makes me feel unsafe and I know it would make your other female classmates feel unsafe.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luc Cousineau is a professor at the University of Waterloo. Cousineau studies how men interact online in men\u2019s and men\u2019s rights spaces.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cousineau says that the classroom is one of the best spaces to address concerns and educate students about creators like Tate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe can have a more direct influence across a wider variety of people at school than you can by trying to, for lack of a better word, infiltrate the home,\u201d says Cousineau.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it\u2019s not a one-size-fits-all solution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can&#8217;t build a program in Ottawa that&#8217;s going to work in Lethbridge,\u201d he says. \u201cThose communities are so different.
