The only thing breaking the silence is the rumble of an idling bus awaiting its passengers: members of <a href=\"http:\/\/stonymondayriot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stony Monday Riot<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bytownboys.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bytown Boys SC<\/a>, Ottawa Fury FC\u2019s die-hard fans.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for being up so early? It\u2019s match day. These fans are busing down to Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., to watch their beloved team take on the New York Cosmos in the Soccer Bowl, the North American Soccer League (NASL) championship game. After placing ninth out of 11 teams in this year\u2019s spring season, the team rose to first in the fall, earning the chance to compete in the playoffs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_200\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cusjc.ca\/thejunction\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/image2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-200\" class=\"wp-image-200 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cusjc.ca\/thejunction\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/image2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Kendra Shannon, a founding member of Stony Monday Riot, encourages women to get involved with supporters' clubs. THE JUNCTION\/Curtis Panke.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m tired, but pretty excited,\u201d says Kendra Shannon, one of Stony Monday Riot\u2019s founding members. \u201cIt\u2019s almost like Christmas morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With kickoff less than 12 hours away, Shannon, who\u2019s dressed head-to-toe in Stony Monday Riot gear, says she is doing her best to save her energy. \u201cI\u2019m trying to keep everything level until the match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Supporters\u2019 clubs, which are wildly popular in European sports, are relatively new in North America, existing only in soccer \u2013 for now. In cities across Canada, members gather at games to cheer on their teams, waving props such as flags, banners and scarfs, or creating unique songs and chants accompanied by loud drums.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=zlpL5_wdIyqs.kzgV2-9TfaS0\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;That was kind of the message that we wanted to send \u2014 that we\u2019re a little bit rebellious and Ottawa is a little tame. We need to bring that back to the community, that spirit of pressure, passion, excitement and aggression.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Matt Hawkins, who is a PhD student at Carleton University, and another founding member of Stony Monday Riot, says that while chaotic, the commotion is definitely worth it. \u201cIt\u2019s loud. We have drums going, people yelling, chanting, and singing. It\u2019s 90 minutes of support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the supporters can get rowdy during matches, they separate themselves from some of their European counterparts, as they don\u2019t participate in hooliganism. Soccer violence is a stigma linked to supporters&#8217; clubs, but for Hawkins \u201cit\u2019s so far away from Canadian context\u201d that it shouldn\u2019t be an issue for people.<\/p>\n<p>Stony Monday Riot and the Bytown Boys SC started supporting the Fury before the team was promoted to the NASL in 2014 from the Premier Development League. The Bytown Boys was founded in 2011, with Stony Monday Riot entering the scene two years later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe decided to create our own supporters\u2019 group with the idea of making a supporters\u2019 culture that belongs to Canada and Ottawa,\u201d Hawkins says.<\/p>\n<p>The Stony Monday Riot culture draws on the club\u2019s name, a reference to a brawl of the same name between Tory and Reform political supporters that took place in Ottawa on Sept. 17, 1849.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was kind of the message that we wanted to send,\u201d Hawkins says. \u201cThat we\u2019re a little bit rebellious and Ottawa is a little tame. We need to bring that back to the community, that spirit of pressure, passion, excitement and aggression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bytown Boys SC took a similar approach, rooting itself in Ottawa history by taking the city\u2019s original name.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Creating an all-inclusive space<\/h4>\n<p>However, with Stony Monday Riot and the Bytown Boys SC, it\u2019s not just about supporting the Fury on match days; it\u2019s also about creating a welcoming environment for its members and those who join them at games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a small community vibe,\u201d says Stephane Brisson-Merrick, a founding member of the Bytown Boys SC. \u201cWe\u2019re all friends and we all know each other.\u201d With members between six and 66 years old, Brisson-Merrick describes the club as a place where they \u201ctreat everyone like Norm from <em>Cheers<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stony Monday Riot was created by Ottawa newcomers looking to feel connected to their city. \u201cA lot of our members moved to Ottawa for school and work,&#8221; says Hawkins, who moved to Ottawa from Burlington, Ont. &#8220;A big part of what we wanted to create is a sense of community \u2013 a culture \u2013 that is supportive of wherever you come from. We use the Fury as our anchor point.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Shannon adds that club members \u201creally wanted to make sure that women, men and everyone who wants to get involved could get involved in a positive way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a family thing, man,\u201d says Martin Gonzales, a photographer joining the supporters\u2019 clubs on their trip across the border. \u201cIf you love soccer, you\u2019re in the right place with these guys.\u201d<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Active in the community<\/h4>\n<p>For these supporters\u2019 clubs, community involvement is just as important as getting together on match day.<\/p>\n<p>The Bytown Boys SC has raised money for various causes, including muscular dystrophy awareness and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Ottawa-Street-Soccer-184015888289290\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ottawa Street Soccer<\/a>, a non-profit organization that gives homeless people the chance to be part of a team.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF; border: 0; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: 0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max- width: 658px; padding: 0; width: calc(100% - 2px);\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-=\"\">\n<div style=\"padding: 8px;\">\n<div style=\"background: #F8F8F8; line-height: 0; margin-top: 40px; padding: 50.0% 0; text- align: center; width: 100%;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 8px 0 0 0; padding: 0 4px;\"><a style=\"color: #000; font- family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line- height: 17px; text-decoration: none; word-wrap: break-word;\" href=\"https:\/\/instagram.com\/p\/7i7QHhm-eq\/\" target=\"_blank\">Section W tifo today, thanks for the pic, @furyfc. As Brisson-Merrick says, \u201cWhen a team screws up, you get over it and move on,\u201d because there\u2019s always another match. Despite the Fury losing the NASL championship on Sunday, Hawkins says he hopes the team\u2019s recent success will create a stronger bond between the team and its fans. He says it should be \u201cabout supporting the team whether we\u2019re winning or losing, because it\u2019s more about the community than the successes.\u201d Whether it\u2019s in the stands or in the community, rejoicing in victory or mourning defeat, the members of Stony Monday Riot and the Bytown Boys SC say they will be there for the Fury and the city of Ottawa.
