Photo by Sharanya Tharmarajan.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p> <!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.6&#8243; min_height=&#8221;35px&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;-10px||5px|||&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Kanata residents aren\u2019t sure the grass is greener when it comes to plans for local golf course.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.6&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;1px||1px|||&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;4px||1px|||&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Kanata Lakes residents there has been one consistent woe for the last year: the threat of the 70-hectare golf course at the heart of their community being turned into a mix of houses and apartment buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last December, ClubLink, who owns the Kanata Golf Course, said it was looking at working with Minto Communities and Richcraft Homes to replace the golf course with housing. In October they filed an official application to the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haleigh Johns grew up in Kanata Lakes, enjoying the golf course in her backyard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My family is impacted by ClubLink selling the course because it would greatly change the lifestyle of living in Kanata that we\u2019ve enjoyed for over 20 years,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe greenspace provided by the golf course allows residents of Kanata to toboggan, ski, and snowshoe in the winter in a way that isn\u2019t possible without this vast greenspace. Also, (our) property value would decrease if we no longer had a property backing on the course.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanata North Coun. Jenna Sudds understands community members\u2019 concerns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople have made critical life decisions in purchasing a home in this community,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople who aspire to be around nature and (the golf course) greenspace have either moved in the vicinity or made use of this space on a regular basis.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudds has been the public face of the fight against the golf course. She has met with residents in her office, knocked on doors and held meetings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the last year, she has been the community\u2019s No. 1 source on what\u2019s going on at City Hall, where officials have been mulling their options to safeguard the greenspace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last month the city put the golf course application in front of the Ontario Superior Court in an effort to force ClubLink to withdraw its proposal or give up the land to the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI realized \u2026 very quickly how harmful this proposal was for our community,\u201d said Sudds. \u201cSo ever since I have been working to oppose that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.6&#8243; The picture above shows Kanata residents enjoying the golf course greenspace even during the winter months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.6&#8243; min_height=&#8221;235px&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;-21px|||||&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>The forty percent agreement<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the 18-hole golf course anchors the neighbourhood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Kanata Lakes community was designed around the golf course,\u201d Sudds said. \u201cThis was part of the master vision for this part of the city and it was solidified via a legal agreement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1980s, the original land developer, Campeau Corp. signed the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kanatanorth.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Forty-Per-Cent-Amending-Agreement.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forty Percent Agreement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d with the City of Kanata, ensuring 40 per cent of the land in the Kanata Lakes area remains as greenspace. If realized, ClubLink\u2019s proposal would see more than half of the golf course turned to residential units, while the rest of the land would become roads, storm water ponds, smaller parks and open spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the meeting, participants took to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/2308672552700740\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kanata Greenspace Protection Coalition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Facebook community to express their frustrations. In October they filed an official application to the city.<br><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Haleigh Johns grew up in Kanata Lakes, enjoying the golf course in her backyard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cMy family is impacted by ClubLink selling the course because it would greatly change the lifestyle of living in Kanata that we\u2019ve enjoyed for over 20 years,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cThe greenspace provided by the golf course allows residents of Kanata to toboggan, ski, and snowshoe in the winter in a way that isn\u2019t possible without this vast greenspace. Also, (our) property value would decrease if we no longer had a property backing on the course.\u201d<br><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Kanata North Coun. Jenna Sudds understands community members\u2019 concerns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cPeople have made critical life decisions in purchasing a home in this community,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople who aspire to be around nature and (the golf course) greenspace have either moved in the vicinity or made use of this space on a regular basis.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Sudds has been the public face of the fight against the golf course. She has met with residents in her office, knocked on doors and held meetings.<br><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In the last year, she has been the community\u2019s No. 1 source on what\u2019s going on at City Hall, where officials have been mulling their options to safeguard the greenspace.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Last month the city put the golf course application in front of the Ontario Superior Court in an effort to force ClubLink to withdraw its proposal or give up the land to the city.<br><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cI realized \u2026 very quickly how harmful this proposal was for our community,\u201d said Sudds. \u201cSo ever since I have been working to oppose that.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><em>Embed photo of instagram page with the use of the gold course<\/em><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Caption of photo: The Kanatagreenspace Instagram page, run by members of the community, showcases the beauty and different uses of the golf course.
