One store shut its doors in protest of the excessive consumerism associated with the day.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- divi:paragraph -->This year Purple Urchin Soap, which sells handmade soaps and beauty products, is experimenting with a Black Friday sale for the first time.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- divi:paragraph -->\u201cWe decided to test it out and see how it works,\u201d said Shelby-lyn Miller, the store\u2019s marketing manager.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- divi:paragraph -->The store puts an emphasis on supporting local and sustainable businesses and sees Black Friday as an opportunity to grow as a small business.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- divi:paragraph -->The store began seeing online sales as early as 7 a.m. Friday, hours before the shop opened its doors at 11 a.m.<br \/> <!-- \/divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.6&#8243; custom_margin=&#8221;-29px||10px|||&#8221;]<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" allow=\"autoplay\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/720467581&#038;color=%235ce1e6&#038;auto_play=false&#038;hide_related=false&#038;show_comments=true&#038;show_user=true&#038;show_reposts=false&#038;show_teaser=true\"><\/iframe>[\/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.6&#8243; text_font_size=&#8221;13px&#8221; text_line_height=&#8221;1.2em&#8221; min_height=&#8221;29px&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;-10px||6px|||&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Black Friday, Shelby-lyn Miller, marketing manager of Purple Urchin Soap, explains the store can\u2019t compete with big-box stores but they can appeal to their customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.6&#8243; min_height=&#8221;351px&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miller said the store is interested in comparing the total year-end sales from this year to last year, and seeing if the Black Friday sale made a difference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Purple Urchin Soap is not physically open on Boxing Day, there is usually a sale for online orders, which Miller said they would also compare to Black Friday\u2019s sales numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other stores hold Black Friday sales annually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t look at the companies we are competing against, we have our special clients and we offer what is good for our clients,\u201d said Bobby Gurung, the owner of the women\u2019s clothing store BGGO Boutique.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was busy Friday thanks to a mailout they sent to their regular customers offering up to 70 per cent off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enrico Crivellari, the general manager of Davidson\u2019s Jewellers, echoed this sentiment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are a specialized business, it\u2019s more of a destination store. Photo by Kevin O\u2019Rourke McColl.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.0.6&#8243; min_height=&#8221;235px&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><b>Anti Black Friday: buy nothing\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Third Avenue just off Bank Street, Octopus Books shut its doors Friday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On its website, the bookstore announced its support for Buy Nothing Day while signs discouraging shoppers from buying anything hung in the store\u2019s windows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their website also had a statement regarding the store\u2019s closure: \u201cThe economics of Black Friday are gross. The ecologics (sic) of it are gross. &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur economy is breaking the planet. And folks are going broke getting steals and deals. Black Friday. Don\u2019t buy it. Buy Nothing Day. Go home.
