I feel that the toxicity of fast fashion is underrepresented,\u201d said Boudreau, 24.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The term \u201cfast fashion\u201d describes the production of rapid, inexpensive, on-trend mass-market clothing. In Canada specifically, the average person throws over <a href=\"https:\/\/rco.on.ca\/the-average-person-throws-away-37-kilograms-of-textiles-annually\/\">36 kilograms of textiles<\/a> into landfills annually.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The City of Ottawa did not provide a figure for how much clothing goes to local landfills.\u00a0 They have compiled a <a href=\"https:\/\/app06.ottawa.ca\/cgi-bin\/search\/recycle\/q.pl?q=Clothing&amp;lang=en\">list<\/a> of local charity shops accepting clothing donations.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Boudreau said that her generation can make small changes to their fashion habits to reduce their carbon emissions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, millennials campaign for climate change, but we aren\u2019t offering a solution, and the solution can start with simple life changes,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not easy to make a commitment to never shop fast fashion again. But you can start small, and work your way up to what\u2019s manageable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:heading --><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'News Cycle';\">\u2018Reduce, reuse and recycle\u2019 meets shopping<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><!-- \/divi:heading --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Established nearly three decades ago, Old Ottawa South consignment shop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theclothessecret.com\/\">The Clothes Secret<\/a> is committed to providing women with affordable, sustainable clothes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The store combines the look of a curated boutique with the thrill of raiding your older sister\u2019s closet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of our main things is \u2018reduce, reuse, and recycle,\u201d explained Chelsea Pepin, the daughter of the owner. \u201cWe recycle everything we can possibly recycle [through consignment]. If it doesn\u2019t work for our store, it is mended and donated. We try to reduce the amount of stuff that is going into landfills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Pepin said that she has noticed a trend amongst customers searching for more high-end brands even when shopping second-hand. The stigma of wearing second-hand clothing is shifting, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kijiji.ca\/kijijicentral\/app\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Kijiji-Index-Report-2019_EN_final_pages-2_compressed.pdf\">survey by Kijiji<\/a>, as consumers are increasingly becoming aware of the conditions in which inexpensive clothing is manufactured.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Stores such as The Clothes Secret are keeping consumers from having to choose between fashion and their environmental values. <a href=\"https:\/\/alexxbarreto8.wixsite.com\/website\/home\/easy-ways-to-be-eco-friendly\">Alexandra Barreto<\/a>, an Ottawa-based lifestyle blogger and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alixasamom\/\"> Instagram<\/a> content creator, understands that this is not always easy because of the pressure on social media to keep up with trends.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think a pressure as a blogger is always having something different and new to wear and not repeating outfits or having a certain outfit for certain events,\u201d said Barreto. \u201cI quickly realized how unsustainable that is both environmentally and for my personal budget so I started doing a lot more thrifting and second hand shopping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Barreto said that this transformation starts with small changes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes I still do buy something trendy but I know I\u2019m on a learning curve so I\u2019ll get better as a continue to shift my mindset. I think the easiest place to start is to shop your closet and repurpose old things or alter them,\u201d said Barreto.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:heading --><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'News Cycle';\"><strong>Taking charge for change<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'News Cycle';\"> <!-- \/divi:heading --> <!-- divi:paragraph --> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Boudreau said she recognizes the need for major policies to combat climate change. But she thinks that her generation needs to be part of the solution.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel that we are the source of the problem, as fast fashion targets our generation. It\u2019s our job to say no, and to make demands of these businesses to change,\u201d said Boudreau.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>She has a no-nonsense attitude toward misconceptions about thrifting, like second-hand and ethical shopping is style and size exclusive.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an unlimited amount of fast fashion that can be purchased second hand, through apps like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2019\/06\/depop-live-selling-clothes-influencers\/591595\/\"> Depop<\/a> that allow private owners to sell clothing. Yes, there is curated vintage shops that target a specific style demographic, but we have the vintage shopping world at our fingertips.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Boudreau has begun posting videos about her #30dayvintage campaign in the lead up to the official launch of the challenge. For those looking to make a change, Boudreau has some advice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/divi:paragraph --> <!-- divi:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cIt just takes a quick Google search to find exactly what you\u2019re looking for,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you truly feel that you can\u2019t shop second hand, it\u2019s critical that we do everything possible to extend the life cycle of our clothing. I feel that the toxicity of fast fashion is underrepresented,\u201d said Boudreau, 24.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The term \u201cfast fashion\u201d describes the production of rapid, inexpensive, on-trend mass-market clothing. In December, Boudreau will be launching her online campaign #30daysvintage, challenging millennials all over the world to shop vintage and second-hand.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Following weeks of climate change protests in Ottawa, local millennials are seeking environmentally sustainable alternatives to the mass market clothing and textile industry.<br><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2><strong>Fast fashion on a global scale<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/putting-brakes-fast-fashion\">United Nations Environmental Programme<\/a>, the global fashion industry produces 20 per cent of global wastewater and 10 per cent of global carbon emissions \u2013 more than all international flights and maritime shipping.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The report also stated a subsection of the industry, textile dying, is the second largest polluter of the earth\u2019s water.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>In response to this crisis, the programme<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/putting-brakes-fast-fashion\"> announced<\/a> in November that they will be launching the UN Alliance on Sustainable Fashion to encourage industry-wide change.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Insert chart here<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Internationally, data from the United States illustrates the vast divide between how much clothing is produced each year and how much ends up in landfills in much of North America. In Canada specifically, the average person throws over <a href=\"https:\/\/rco.on.ca\/the-average-person-throws-away-37-kilograms-of-textiles-annually\/\">36 kilograms of textiles<\/a> into landfills annually.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The City of Ottawa did not provide a figure for how much clothing goes to local landfills.&nbsp; They have compiled a <a href=\"https:\/\/app06.ottawa.ca\/cgi-bin\/search\/recycle\/q.pl?q=Clothing&amp;lang=en\">list<\/a> of local charity shops accepting clothing donations.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Boudreau said that her generation can make small changes to their fashion habits to reduce their carbon emissions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cYes, millennials campaign for climate change, but we aren\u2019t offering a solution, and the solution can start with simple life changes,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not easy to make a commitment to never shop fast fashion again. But you can start small, and work your way up to what\u2019s manageable.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2><strong>\u2018Reduce, reuse and recycle\u2019 meets shopping&nbsp;<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Established nearly three decades ago, Old Ottawa South consignment shop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theclothessecret.com\/\">The Clothes Secret<\/a> is committed to providing women with affordable, sustainable clothes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The store combines the look of a curated boutique with the thrill of raiding your older sister\u2019s closet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cOne of our main things is \u2018reduce, reuse, and recycle,\u201d explained Chelsea Pepin, the daughter of the owner. \u201cWe recycle everything we can possibly recycle [through consignment]. If it doesn\u2019t work for our store, it is mended and donated. We try to reduce the amount of stuff that is going into landfills.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Pepin said that she has noticed a trend amongst customers searching for more high-end brands even when shopping second-hand. The stigma of wearing second-hand clothing is shifting, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kijiji.ca\/kijijicentral\/app\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Kijiji-Index-Report-2019_EN_final_pages-2_compressed.pdf\">survey by Kijiji<\/a>, as consumers are increasingly becoming aware of the conditions in which inexpensive clothing is manufactured.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Stores such as The Clothes Secret are keeping consumers from having to choose between fashion and their environmental values. <a href=\"https:\/\/alexxbarreto8.wixsite.com\/website\/home\/easy-ways-to-be-eco-friendly\">Alexandra Barreto<\/a>, an Ottawa-based lifestyle blogger and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alixasamom\/\"> Instagram<\/a> content creator, understands that this is not always easy because of the pressure on social media to keep up with trends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cI think a pressure as a blogger is always having something different and new to wear and not repeating outfits or having a certain outfit for certain events,\u201d said Barreto. \u201cI quickly realized how unsustainable that is both environmentally and for my personal budget so I started doing a lot more thrifting and second hand shopping.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Barreto said that this transformation starts with small changes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cSometimes I still do buy something trendy but I know I\u2019m on a learning curve so I\u2019ll get better as a continue to shift my mindset. I think the easiest place to start is to shop your closet and repurpose old things or alter them,\u201d said Barreto.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2><strong>Taking charge for change<\/strong><\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Boudreau said she recognizes the need for major policies to combat climate change. But she thinks that her generation needs to be part of the solution.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cI feel that we are the source of the problem, as fast fashion targets our generation. It\u2019s our job to say no, and to make demands of these businesses to change,\u201d said Boudreau.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>She has a no-nonsense attitude toward misconceptions about thrifting, like second-hand and ethical shopping is style and size exclusive.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cThere is an unlimited amount of fast fashion that can be purchased second hand, through apps like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2019\/06\/depop-live-selling-clothes-influencers\/591595\/\"> Depop<\/a> that allow private owners to sell clothing. Yes, there is curated vintage shops that target a specific style demographic, but we have the vintage shopping world at our fingertips.\u201d<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>For those looking to make a change, Boudreau has some advice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cIt just takes a quick Google search to find exactly what you\u2019re looking for,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you truly feel that you can\u2019t shop second hand, it\u2019s critical that we do everything possible to extend the life cycle of our clothing.
