“Applying AI in small newsrooms: lessons from the AI in Journalism Challenge”
This panel discussion will review practical lessons from AIJC – an accelerator programme in which 12 newsrooms from around the world developed pragmatic generative AI applications between July and November of 2023. The discussion will focus on what these 12 projects reveal about hands-on use of generative AI in newsrooms, as well as on insight from specific projects and larger opportunities for facilitating and accelerating the exploitation of AI in the service of public service journalism.

“Using AI to help detect bias and discrimination in English and Arabic text”
What’s it like to use AI to help detect bias and discrimination in text? Can it be done in both English and Arabic? These were the questions that journalists and technologists from Deutsche Welle, ABC Australia, and Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism addressed when they began the JournalismAI Fellowship in 2023. Over six months, they collaborated across newsrooms, time zones, and departments to come up with a working plugin to surface biased text.

“Leading a newsroom in the world of AI”
In this time of continuing financial challenges, only the biggest news media giants have the resources to hire AI experts to lead their responses to the challenges and opportunities the acceleration of AI is presenting. What about the rest of us? As a newsroom leader, how do you navigate this new AI world? What might you do to help your team respond to yet another disruption – perhaps the biggest one since publishing news on the Internet first began upending journalism.

“Regulating AI in (and for) the news”
AI has become a pivotal tool in news and journalism. News organisations around the world have harnessed traditional and generative AI to analyse large datasets, automate routine tasks, personalise news delivery, and even aid in news reporting. However, the integration of AI into journalism is not without its challenges and raises difficult ethical and regulatory questions around issues such as accuracy, bias, transparency, accountability, and the concentration of power. A growing number of news organisations have tackled these challenges head-on, developing AI guidelines and policies. Meanwhile, different regulatory bodies are working in similar directions, establishing standards and regulations to ensure that the use of AI in journalism and the information ecosystem at large adheres to ethical principles and fosters a pluralistic and safe public sphere and that the technology does not become concentrated in the hand of a few companies.

“The new voice of journalism: audio news in the age of AI”
Of all the ways generative AI will impact journalism, one of the most intriguing is a potential shift from the written to the spoken word. Artificial intelligence is already being harnessed by some publishers to create audio versions of text articles, and clone voices to narrate them. As news consumers spend more time with audio journalism, how do news organisations navigate yet another frontier of innovation? Three leading experts in audio storytelling discuss what’s about to change and what will stay the same.

“AI and journalism: what does it take to get it right?”
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionising how we gather, process, and disseminate information. The future impact of this revolution hinges on our technological choices. This panel will address critical questions: How can we ethically harness AI in journalism? What guidelines should govern its use? How can we ensure information integrity when most web content will be AI-generated? And how do we maintain editorial independence when newsrooms utilise opaque AI systems? To tackle these issues, our panellists will discuss the foundational principles of the Paris Charter on AI and Journalism.

“How does implementing AI in your newsroom drive sustainability?”
What difference does it make implementing AI tools in your newsroom? In a conversation with Nota, an AI startup working directly with newsrooms, and local news publishers, we’ll explore what before and after AI looks like. Through understanding the experiences of local newsrooms that use tools to build audience, optimize headlines and expand their social media presence, we’ll explore what before and after AI integration looks like. From wider audience for newsrooms reaching communities of color to decreasing time from story creation to publication, a year of use of these tools is yielding new insights about how newsrooms may change.

“The rise of AI: journalism after platforms”
The Facebook Journalism Project and the Google News Initiative’s era of dominance in the news industry, at least in its most recent iteration, has ended. Facebook has divorced itself from news, shuttering its journalism program and deprecating its news-related products and services. While the GNI continues to direct some funds to US news associations, its commitment to journalism nowadays is mostly channeled to its Google News Showcase, available in 22 countries, as well as novel AI-fueled solutions, like tools pitched to major publishers to support journalists writing news articles. At the same time, Google also continues to invest in its journalism and AI partnerships and fellowships, and building AI into its core products… This panel aims to draw parallels between the social media platform duopoly’s global impact on journalism with AI developers’ growing role in news media, all within a new technological and regulatory environment.

“Freelance journalism in the age of AI”
To thrive in the age of AI, freelance journalists need to know how to adapt. This expert-led panel session will explore the challenges and opportunities of AI for freelancers and discuss how they can utilise AI tools to enhance their skills and become more efficient. Though aimed at freelancers, this session would be useful to any journalist seeking to understand how to use AI technologies to their advantage.

“Generative AI in the news: one year on”
Looking at the journalistic landscape over the past year, the fervor surrounding the integration of Generative AI (GenAI) into news practices is undeniable. Ever since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022, artificial intelligence – and large language models and transformer models in particular – have captured the imagination of news professionals worldwide, and their presence in news organisations has become increasingly pervasive. Journalists now leverage generative AI for tasks such as translation, transcription, and data analysis, as well as (visual) content generation to name just a few. On the business front, GenAI has inspired the development of new news products and formats, the improvement of workflows and is explored for tasks such as better personalization.
At the same time, the use of the technology has also led to concerns. Factual errors in the output of LLMs and fears about the effect on audience trust have led many organisations to institute standards and guidelines for the use of AI. Journalists are worried about their jobs and professional identity, while publishers are concerned about the privacy of their data, the viability of their business models and decisions by platform and search giants which could potentially reshape the information ecosystem at large.

“How to prepare for the AI whistleblowers?”
As the secrecy at multi-billion-dollar Big AI companies becomes increasingly apparent, it also becomes more and more clear that true accountability is going to rely on insiders coming forward with information for the public good. Just like notoriously Facebook or Theranos, journalists will be on the front line, working with dedicated and brave individuals who risk everything to share information. Big AI permeates all industry and government – where the source sits may not be obvious. And the information the source provides may be far more technical (and nebulous) than even the most seasoned tech investigative journalist may be prepared to develop into a story.

“Social media, AI, and elections: perspectives from the Global South on the ‘Year of Democracy’ ”
2024 will bring more voters to the polls than ever in history, with elections planned in at least 64 countries, many of them in key global south countries with fragile information ecosystems. Technology, including the tide of AI disruption, brings tools that could radically change information flows and offer potential for manipulation at scale, targeting underrepresented groups and those who seek to provide accurate, trustworthy information. Such disruptions could further damage audience trust, subvert election results, sharpen divisions, and ultimately erode democracy. As journalists and civil society battle to address these risks, what strategies could be deployed to safeguard information ecosystems in the Global South?

“The AI elections”
With billions heading to the polls this year, the stakes for global democracies are substantial. Generative AI advances and broad accessibility are already reshaping sectors with exponential growth expected to continue. How will these tools change the information ecosystem and how should news media respond?

“How to spot AI disinformation”
Disinformation using generative AI existed before but became a big thing in 2023 – and this challenge will be even bigger in 2024. Due to improved generative programs and a better accessibility of AI apps, we can see a rise in use of AI technologies. And this applies also for the spreading of false information; AI-generated images and videos are flooding our social feeds. The conflict between Israel and Hamas is just one of many examples to prove this. Deepfakes are aiming to influence elections and voting behaviour. Fake AI-generated influencers or even doctors have millions of views on their social media accounts. And a part of the audience isn’t aware about the fact, that these figures aren’t real. Joscha Weber will try to answer these questions together with the audience during a workshop dedicated to this growing challenge. As Deutsche Welle’s head of fact-checking, he will include examples of DW’s verification work and will share examples which help to understand the process of fact-checking.

“Deepfakes and deceptive AI: how’s election year 2024 really going?”
Four months into an omnibus election year and the ongoing generative AI revolution, what are the realities of how journalists are encountering the use of deceptive generative AI audio, video and images, as well as the misuse of claims of AI to dismiss real content? Are the fears around AI’s impact justified, or are we in another premature deepfake hype cycle? Grounded in the ongoing global work of WITNESS, including the global Deepfakes Rapid Response Force that connects real world deepfake cases to leading media forensic experts, the presentation will provide a primer on the critical usages seen so far and their impact, the roll-out of technical solutions including detection and content authenticity, as well as how legislators and platforms are responding.

The AI Journalism Lab is an effort to involve journalists in finding ways to navigate and harness generative AI in ethical ways that reinforce trust from communities and increase impact, even as the technology is in its infancy. In addition, we believe that journalists should have a direct understanding of AI through experimentation to be able to think strategically about its applications to their work.

“Launching the AI Elections Initiative: A new effort to strengthen US election resilience,” By Vivian Schiller & Josh Lawson, Jan. 5, 2024
The “first AI elections” in the United States will be held against the backdrop of unprecedented distrust in civic institutions, the political system, and traditional media. Rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) mean that voters face a likely future of compelling deepfakes, highly targeted fraudulent messages, and compounding cybersecurity threats. While much about the 2024 elections is uncertain, we know bad actors will try to manipulate public opinion and to sway voter behavior at key moments before polls open. Our country needs concerted leadership and strategic focus at the intersection of AI, elections, and social trust.
