This Midweek show fell smack on the day Canada officially legalized cannabis, so we were on the story:
Reporter Katie Jacobs joined us live from the ByWard Market to explain how cafes and restaurants there think they may be affected; we also looked at how a looming postal strike could snuff out cannabis deliveries from online retailers; and we heard how a mushrooming of cannabis research funding may be next.
Our reporters also visited an international vegan film fest in Ottawa, a theatre company specializing in short plays, a library where you can check out an actual living person, and a film series opening in Ottawa linked to reconciliation between Canada and Indigenous peoples.
Reporter Corey Price explained why much-mocked “safe spaces” actually matter, while Alex Kurial demystified how the sacred Tibetan Buddhist art of the sand mandala design represents the concept of impermanence.
Other reports covered charges in a local human trafficking case, beautiful art that captures the ugliness of environmental degradation, and insights into the local zine scene.
Midweek’s Reina Cowan had a moving conversation with Warrant Officer John Gallagher, a Canadian Afghan veteran still locked in a fight with PTSD, and Liam Leonard reported on how Gord Downie’s fans are doing one year after the Tragically Hip singer’s death.
Then Midweek’s Meg Sutton showed real reporting range with stories on the safety of seatbelts in school buses and the history of pumpkins on porches.
Finally, Midweek’s Adm van der Zwan took us on a visit to a local blind psychic who discovered at an early age he could see far more than those with actual eyesight.
Adam’s documentary was a real show-stopper — both because of his subject’s shocking reading of Adam’s own future and because…well, it was the last item in the show.
Yet another wide-ranging Midweek show — so enjoy giving it a listen!
