In the first edition of the Winter 2019 season of the 25th Hour, students speak with people across Ottawa who are changing their lives — or the lives of others — in special and interesting ways.

Poetic Origins

Poetic Origins Jamaal Jackson Rogers is a local spoken word artist and arts educator. A poetry unit in his English as Second Language class led him into writing his own poem. Now, he earned the title of Ottawa’s Poet Laureate and co-owns an arts venue which prioritizes the voices of marginalized communities.  

Inked: reshaping the stigma of hand-poked tattoos

Inked: reshaping the stigma of hand-poked tattoos Katie Nelson is a self-taught tattoo artist who operates out of her Chinatown apartment. Through her art she is constantly battling against the stigma that hand done tattoos are unsafe or poorly done. Anyone Can Flip Nick Grimard, after five years of flipping from one unhappy cubicle to another, finally stuck the landing as the co-owner of Laws of Motion Gymnastics Club. He now teaches high-level gymnastics to recreational athletes, passing on the expertise and passion from his past career as a promising young gymnast. A Dancer’s Prayer For some, dancing is hobby. For Olivia Carey, dancing is her prayer. This young woman began dancing at a young age, but she doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon. Climb On

Climb On Ottawa rock climber Cat Carkner has competed on the national and international stage, as well as at the Youth Olympics in Argentina. The act of balancing her competition and the rest of her life, as well as the nature of the sport itself, has taught her important lessons in patience and perseverance.
